Budget Dating: College Style

July 15, 2008

It’s no secret that dating can be a bank breaking experience in college, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be. There are many ways to be a classy entertainer on a skimpy college budget.

Unless you’re lucky enough to be a trust fund beneficiary, dating can seriously cut into your funds that could be allocated to more important things, like beer. But fear not hopeless romantics, I’m here to offer a guide to dating within your means, and having a great time doing it.

First things first when it comes to dating, who foots the bill? While any knight in shining armor will tell you it is a man’s duty to pay for every date, this isn’t always so. A recent study conducted on college-age men and women by Nick Raborn of Humboldt University found a double standard in regards to the issue of who should have to open their wallet for the date.

While most men believe they are expected to pay for the date, women say that if the female asks the male out it is their responsibility to shell out the cash.

One of the easiest and most romantic outings is a nature hike and a picnic. Virtually free of charge you can spend an entire day frolicking in the wilderness and score a nice meal too. Nearly everyone will have a great day spending time outdoors, plus it’s a rare opportunity to get away from it all.

Another great budget date is watching a free movie screening. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be an L.A. big shot to find a theater showing free movies. Check your local listings or check you college or university directory to find a limitless supply of ‘priceless’ cinema fun. If you’re really bold you can even tell your date that you were gifted V.I.P. tickets, though I certainly wouldn’t recommend it.

For those hoping to show their date they are the next Charles Baudelaire (famous art critic), bring your special someone to a museum. It’s true that the only thing more plentiful than Starbucks is these preservers of history. Better yet, most museums range from fairly cheap to absolutely free. Although this is clearly a date that favors the ‘hipster’ type it can be pulled off with ease by any broke college student.

If the above suggestions don’t feel right to you, perhaps staying in and watching a movie might be the thing. For less than $10 you can enjoy Hollywood’s finest in the comfort of your own home as well as show your date that you can have fun with them without going out and being crazy. Nothing makes you seem more level headed than being able to take a night off from socializing to hang out in a one on one situation, and you can’t beat the price either.

Dating isn’t cheap. We know this because if it was everyone would be doing it. Nevertheless, these aforementioned ideas should get you started off right in the budget dating sector. Emptying your savings account is not the purpose of courtship so save some time and money by treating your date to one of these great engagements the only way you can, penniless college kid style. Luckily with these few dating ideas your tab should me minimal to nonexistent.
